Imagining one’s own garden is a great exercise in finding out more about oneself. The journey into the secret garden is a metaphor for achieving knowledge in a protected place where our emotions can find their true home. It is an area of refuge, close to one’s own nature and is a dimension full of wonders.
The garden is tame nature, fenced and controlled, a place for thought and of thought. In it is a narrative, poetic, magical and symbolic.
This journey into the garden accompanies us throughout our lives. In it is a map of one’s feelings where plants root and new presences are discovered. As we explore, benefits reveal themselves if we are able to respect the waiting time. We find preserved emotions, sacred and primordial memories, dreams and images. The secret garden is one’s own story, made up day after day both by choices and by apparently random encounters. Its cultivation is not without risks and uncertainties. It is secret because it is not accessible to prying eyes, safeguarding our identity. Perhaps it is the only private space not yet violated by the intrusiveness of technology.
The garden embodies the pleasure of creation. You can mold its material and give shape to dreams, as did Virginia Woolf in her book, “A Room of One’s Own.” It embodies transition and metamorphosis, a metaphor for life itself, achieving states of equilibrium through fertility and abundance, birth, death and rebirth. These are the cycles of time and our souls.
The great adventure of art is the ability to see beyond the limits of the known; art always looks into the territories of the interior. The garden presents a panorama of spirit and growth, of cultivation of interior phenomena. Traveling to the center of ourselves means arriving at the dimension to which only we have the passkey, the creative place from where we draw ideas, images and inspiration. We are the secret garden that will never fade if we are always open to surprise and the beauty of the world.
