Fourteen Italian artists have been involved in the theme of a planetary flag, symbol of union of the planet Earth, of all peoples and continents. The artists have explored the symbology and the history of the flag translating the theme with different expressive languages and representing the planet under various guises and from different angles: mystical, geographical, political. The flags have a particular function, which is to convey a sense of belonging and they embody a genuine international language of immediate understanding. Through colour, geometry and symbolic images the visual message is reduced to the essential, yet the image is powerful and meaningful. This exhibition wishes to be a moment of awareness to go beyond the concept of nationality, to imagine the future of a common destiny of mankind, based on the principle of freedom where no differences, divisions or barriers exist. All this may seem utopian, at present also because it is perhaps easier to create a flag than an idea of harmony of all mankind and a new planetary awareness. when the astronauts during their early trips saw the earth from space, they said that they could see no boundaries and they felt the sensation of the sacredness of the planet Earth. Thus the artists, with the strength and the energy of their creative imagination have travelled and seen the planet from above going beyond the limits and they have borne witness to this with their work on The Flag.
